Granny Cart Market

Last month I attended a random and last minute event at night on the Manhattan side of the East River. Oriana had told me about a granny cart market that was happening, where those who brought a granny cart with them had to have some kind of interactive element to it, whether it be playing music or a game or adding something inside.

Our first stop was to The Price Is Right (In The Granny Cart)! If you didn’t know from my Idiotarod theme from 2009, I love The Price Is Right! For this game, the girl running it had bought some normal food items from her local grocery, and if you came within 50 cents of the actual price, you’d get a prize (she made cookies for prizes)!

She was also wearing one of the blue flower crowns that another cart was making for people, just about everyone there was wearing one, they were so pretty!

Our next stop was the Black Market Girl Scout Troupe cart, where they had a variety of different things you could do to earn yourself a Girl Scout badge! Show off a talent, play one of their games, solve some puzzles, or just impress the girl scout “leaders.” This was a really fun and interactive cart, and I ended up winning two different girl scout badges!

The cart next to this one was the Tiny Monsters cart. In this cart there were materials to make your own monster, along with some already made or partially made monsters which you could add to if you wanted. There was also a notebook to write down the history of your new or updated monster:

and even as we came back to this cart later, two monsters were added:

There was a cart that played charades with famous movie quotes, and if you ended up guessing one right they’d give you a small bag of popcorn! A yummy treat. Another cart had a phonogram record player set up and a dance floor under a disco ball that you could dance to vintage music to! That was a really cute cart (even though none of these things were actually in the cart) to see everyone slow dancing to.

Another good cart was the Holy Cow cart. Just submit your sin into the sin box and pray to the Holy Cow underneath the sheet. Inside the granny cart was an old cow or steer’s skull on a velvet pillow, along with some (electric) candles. Very cool to peek inside and discover that!

And finally, there was the fishing cart! Inside the granny cart were a bunch of fish with paper clips on the front of them and you had a fishing pole with a magnet at the end, and whichever fish you caught came with a fortune. You could either choose to keep the fortune or send it back! I ended up keeping my fortune, however I’ve misplaced it since this night :(

There were more carts than these, but they were more participatory than having something to do with the actual cart, and thus hard to take photos of. There was a cool cart that had mirrors all inside and they put different color changing glowsticks in the bottom, so the reflections made one crazy kaleidoscope!

I think this event happened last minute so there weren’t that many carts or even participants, but it’s something that I’d definitely like to see grow in the future, perhaps it will become another NYC annual tradition!
